![]() It puts off light and a little bit of warmth. It is a nice fire to build when there are a handful of people hanging around the fire. This is an easy fire to make because the fire gets lots of air from the sides and the fire has a focal point above it, which just happens to be more fuel to burn. From there you take progressively larger sticks and place them around the outside of the teepee leaning upwards to continue forming the teepee. Then take some small pieces of kindling, and stand them up over the tinder in the shape of a teepee. The idea is that you take a tinder pile and place it in the center of your fire ring. It is a great fire for beginners because it is easy to build. This is the most common style of fires to see people build. The first type we will address is the teepee. Now, let’s get to the styles of campfires. Or you can do that work before you light it, and more times than not, you can light it and leave it alone for a while. You can hover over the fire and tend to it for a little bit. I believe that there is a certain amount of work that comes with starting and maintaining a fire until it is stable. Then I begin to build what will be the fire. This also makes it easy to grab the size you need without much thought, especially after dark. If needed, I’ll make some feather sticks at this point. This also allows me to see what I have to work with. I cut all different sizes of wood, and quite neurotically, I stage them in different piles for easy access. This ensures the work is done ahead of time and I can just tend to the fire and relax. I collect all my wood and tinder, and then I begin to process it near the fire ring. Each location has different rules and regulations when it comes to fires, so do your due diligence and be safe. Look in advance to see if it is permitted to collect firewood. Take the weather into consideration because the wind can wreak havoc on your fire, or it can blow sparks into the grasslands or forest that surround you. Have the tools to help contain and control the fire, like a shovel, ax, and water. Clear out the fire ring and the surrounding area so that the fire stays under control and in the ring. Once you determine your purpose for the fire, you will have a good idea of which type of fire you should build. Every fire is made of the same three things, but depending on how you build that fire you can produce more heat, or coals, or light. Combining those three elements gives you the fire triangle.
